Don’t let pigeons dictate how you use your home.
The Growing Pigeon Problem in Wimbledon (SW19)
Wimbledon’s unique character, with its blend of lush green spaces and diverse architecture, makes it a prime location for residents and, unfortunately, for feral pigeons. Understanding the local environment is key to effective control.
Proximity to Wimbledon Common and Parks
The beautiful expanse of Wimbledon Common, along with the area's numerous parks and gardens, provides an ideal foraging ground for pigeons. These birds are highly adaptable and thrive in environments where food and water are abundant. They then seek out safe, sheltered, and elevated locations for roosting and nesting – and the balconies of nearby homes and apartment blocks are the perfect spot.
Nesting Habits in Victorian and Modern Architecture
From the charming Victorian terraces in Wimbledon Village to the modern apartment complexes near the station, Wimbledon's architecture offers pigeons a wealth of opportunities. The ledges, window sills, and sheltered corners of older buildings are traditional nesting sites. Equally, the recessed design of modern balconies provides protection from predators and the elements, creating an ideal habitat that encourages pigeons to settle in and breed.
Why Balcony Netting is the Best Solution for South London Flats
While methods like spikes and gels have their place, they are often ineffective for the complete protection of a balcony. Birds can simply land between spikes or build their nests on top of them. For total exclusion, professional-grade bird netting is the industry-standard and most effective solution.
A Complete Barrier
Netting creates an impenetrable physical barrier that denies pigeons access to your balcony entirely. It doesn't just deter them; it excludes them.

Humane & Non-Lethal
Our netting systems are designed to be a humane bird control method. They prevent birds from landing without causing them any harm, encouraging them to find a more suitable natural habitat.
We only use high-quality, UV-stabilised polyethylene netting. This professional-grade material is designed to withstand years of exposure to sunlight and harsh British weather without becoming brittle or degrading.
Our Advanced Pigeon Proofing Installation Process
At Sun Pest Control, we follow a meticulous process honed over years of experience working on properties across South London. Our focus is on safety, durability, and a flawless finish.
Surveying High-Rise Balconies
Every successful installation begins with a thorough, free-of-charge survey. Our certified technicians will visit your Wimbledon property to:
- Assess the balcony's specific structure, size, and fixing points.
- Identify any access challenges, particularly for high-rise flats.
- Discuss the best type and colour of netting for your needs.
- Provide a transparent, fixed-price quote with no hidden costs.
Professional Grade Materials: UV Stabilised Polyethylene
We do not compromise on quality. The netting we use is a heavy-duty, knotted polyethylene that is flame-retardant and rot-proof. It is stabilised against UV radiation, ensuring it remains strong and effective for many years, unlike cheaper alternatives that quickly perish in the sun. The stainless steel wire rope and fixings we use are equally robust, preventing sagging and ensuring the system remains taut and secure.
Discreet Finishes for Conservation Areas
We have extensive experience working within the regulations of the London Borough of Merton, including properties in Wimbledon's conservation areas. We understand the importance of preserving the architectural integrity of your building. Our discreet fixings and choice of netting colours ensure our installations are sympathetic to the building's aesthetic and comply with any local council requirements.
Guano Cleaning & Biocide: Protecting Your Health
A pigeon infestation is more than just a nuisance; it’s a significant health hazard. Pigeon guano (droppings) is acidic and can permanently damage stonework, metal, and paint. More alarmingly, it can host a range of dangerous pathogens.
The health risks associated with bird guano include:
Histoplasmosis
A respiratory disease caused by inhaling fungus from dried droppings.
Cryptococcosis
A fungal infection that can affect the lungs and nervous system.
Psittacosis
A flu-like bacterial illness.
Furthermore, abandoned pigeon nests are breeding grounds for secondary pests like bird mites, fleas, and textile beetles.
Our service includes a full bio-hazardous waste clean-up. Our technicians, wearing appropriate PPE, will safely remove all guano and nesting materials. The area is then thoroughly cleaned and treated with a professional-grade biocide to neutralise all harmful pathogens and eliminate any insect pests, ensuring your balcony is safe and sanitary.

FAQ's
Is the netting visible from the ground?
One of the most common concerns is aesthetics. Our professional netting is designed to be as discreet as possible. The fine, black or stone-coloured twine is remarkably thin and becomes virtually invisible against brickwork or shade from just a short distance away. It will not spoil your view or the appearance of your building.
Will the bird netting harm the pigeons?
Absolutely not. Our netting is a passive, humane exclusion device. It simply creates a barrier that prevents the birds from landing on your balcony. It does not trap or injure them in any way. As proud members of the BPCA (British Pest Control Association), we are committed to ethical and responsible pest management.
Do you provide a guarantee with your work?
Yes, we do. All our pigeon proofing installations are covered by our comprehensive Multi-Visit Guarantee. We ensure the job is done right and will conduct follow-up visits as needed to confirm the solution’s effectiveness, all included in the initial price.
Does bird netting affect property value?
A clean, usable, and safe balcony is a significant asset that can increase a property’s value and appeal to potential buyers or tenants. By preventing property damage from acidic guano and eliminating a health hazard, a professional netting installation is a positive investment that protects your property.
Can I just install pigeon spikes myself?
We strongly advise against DIY solutions for balconies. Spikes are not designed to protect an entire open area; pigeons will simply land next to them or even build their nests within the spikes themselves. Incorrect installation can also damage your property and be ineffective. A professional netting system is the only way to guarantee total exclusion.
How do you access high-rise balconies safely?
Safety is our number one priority. Our technicians are fully trained and certified to work at height. For high-rise buildings, we use a range of access equipment, including mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) or “cherry pickers”. Our team includes IPAF (International Powered Access Federation) certified operators, ensuring all work is carried out safely and efficiently.
